About

About you

It’s all about you. Yes, you! Your attitudes, knowledge, capacity for learning and working; and your willingness to do what it takes to be in business. I’m guessing you have an entrepreneurial interest in business, most likely small business. You might be thinking of starting your own business – part or full time; or perhaps you already own your own business and want to develop it. Maybe you’re an intrepreneur – someone who works within a company, but you’re one of those rare and oh-so-valuable individuals who treats their job as though it were your business. No matter what, you’re probably visiting to check out some aspect of business documented here. Much of the material presented has formed (or informed) my teaching and consulting work over the years, and rather than restrict the audience, and therefore the value of the content to a limited audience, I’m making it available to you, on the net.

It’d be great if you were able to use some of the information and then share the parts that were useful to you. Your stories – case studies – of what worked for you, and what didn’t, are valuable and inspirational for us all. Thanks so much for your participation.

It would be wrong not to have some click-to-sales options for you – hey, we’re talking about business here. You know the drill, sharing link love is a good thing, a click or two when you find something of use helps keep the site here. Thank you again.

About me

Lynsey Gedye, engaged in research at one of my favorite small businesses, the Mean Eyed Cat, Austin, Texas, June 2008.

Hello, my name is Lynsey Gedye. As a little kid I had this vision of exporting grass packed in small boxes to France. Although I only had one box, and knew no one in France, I was very proud of my efforts. Looking back, there were some useful ideas for a budding entrepreneur. First, I had a market in mind – people in France who wanted premium grass to feed their animals – in this case I was thinking people who had pet rabbits (I had a pet rabbit, he liked grass, someone in France would have a pet rabbit). Second, the grass was that fine, delicious grass that rabbits love. Happy rabbits = happy customers. Third, I had a beautiful box in a pale wood, and I nailed the lid down with small brass brads – I was very focussed on the packaging and presentation. I have no idea what happened to the box, the adult part of me guesses my father prized the brads out and dumped the contents; and the child part of me believes somewhere in France there is a very happy rabbit and an equally happy owner.

I moved on to set up grocery shops with my sister, using hay bales as serving counters. My mother gave us play money, and we specialised in selling products – boxes and cans that we had opened carefully from the bottom. Apart from exercising our imaginations, learning to price things, how to give change, and how to get along together were good things. It’s really not surprising that about 20 years later my sister and I went into partnership retailing house plants. From there I worked with many people, teaching and helping them set up and developing their own businesses.

I have a real passion for small business, in particular sustainable business and rural community economic development. I’m inclined to believe that while the essentials remain the same (happy rabbits = happy customers), there is no substitute for thinking and working, and that money is not the only measure of success.

I completed a Masters in Communications degree, based in Poneke – Wellington, Aotearoa – New Zealand. My research projects have included how New Zealand religious and spiritual organisations use their web sites to communicate; and, how accessible are New Zealand government web sites. I expect to undertake further research in the future.

AkoNetNZ is the web presence of my wife and myself. We work in the human resources and education fields; and from time-to-time accept commissions to undertake projects which meet our criteria of being rewarding, interesting, and make contributions to the greater good. If you wish to contact me either use the contact page, or I can be emailed at lynsey dot gedye at gmail dot com, or lynsey_gedye (skype).

We also accept commissions to design, create, and host web sites. We’ve found using WordPress to be a particularly fast and effective way of building content managed sites for people with not enough time (or interest) to be bothered with learning to code, but who need a web presence. We partner with a group of creative companies and individuals, and we are able to offer web hosting as well as our design services. Again, if you wish to contact me I can be emailed at lynsey dot gedye at gmail dot com, or lynsey_gedye (skype), or use the contact page.

Finally, thank you, dear reader, for stopping by. I hope your time spent here has been interesting and uplifting. Please visit again.
